I finally did it! My 5 year old machine has been upgraded with a few new parts. I spent as little as possible to get as current as possible (hence AM3 & DDR3) with plenty of room to upgrade in the next 1-3 years. Total after rebate was around $220.

Yeah, the video card is pathetic but it gets the job done in WoW... I can actually raid 25mans now without a slideshow effect!

Cuz a custom built machine, if you know your shit, can run very cool, have a ton of processing power, and cost you alot less than any pre-built machine equivilant to it. PC that runs very cool (both cpu & gfx) lasts longer. Could get a 10k rpm HD (best of luck findin a pre-built desktop with one of those that isnt pricey as hell & also has a very good gfx card) & programs running/copying/pasting/archiving/movie-photo editing becomes VERY fast. Archive a 4.5gb movie BDDDDDDDDDDING done.

& cuz for examples like this: Buy a low-end laptop that has an nvidia or ATI gfx card (decent one), but just low ram, cpu, and/or HD space, and you can upgrade all that, and prolly save about $150-$300 vs buying a laptop that already had all those upgrades. Same with desktops, except you have the ability to get a case that matches exactly where u need a fan for ur gfx card & cpu, and make it run nice and cool and STABLE.

Havin the knowledge of knowing how to make a very cool-running case without buying some expensive "cooling case" , not only saves u cash immidiately and over time, it's like adding a turbo to ur car. =p

That's the case I almost used last year when I put together my rig, but in the end went with this "cylon" beast.

I'm going to switch to Windows 7 64-bit next month and upgrade my graphics card to something like the Geforce GTX 285 or maybe the next gen Nvidia card if it isn't outrageously expensive. I like running games at 1920 x 1200 and the 512 MB on my current card is a bit weak for that resolution.
