Also, the Gothic series is worth checking out. Goes pretty cheap on steam atm.

Re: Need a game...
I just got into Mount & Blade Warband and I am having an absolute blast. It's an open world RPG where you run around and build an army/nation. Imagine playing Rome Total War in the 3rd person and I think you would have a fair idea of the game.
The combat however is... Unique. Instead of just running around and clicking randomly to hack and slash your way through the enemy line you use the mouse to customize every swing. Want to swing from the left? Click and push the mouse to the left. Want to drop the sword onto the poor bastards head? Click and push forward. Blocking works the same way, but there is an option to have it do a sort of auto block for you. You still need to right click, but it will position your weapon in the correct area.
It sounds hard, and it really is at first, but it is easily the most rewarding fighting game I have ever played. You actually have to think and work for every kill.
Archery is the standard fair. Line up your shot and it fly. The crossbows are the easiest to start out with as you can just load it and fire when you please where as you can only pull a bow back for so long before you get tired and your aim falls off. Being an archer is kinda fun also because you can stay back and watch the battle unfold while you try to send an arrow into an exposed face or backside. Oh yeah, and killing the horse out from under a knight who is charging you is ridiculously fun. Especially when he has enough speed to slide up to your feet so you can just kill him before he even has a chance to go for his sword.
I just found out that you can recruit 'companions' to join you in addition to your standard troops. These guys and gals bring skills that aid your group like first aid, tracking, engineering, etc. I am still fairly new to the game so I have yet to see how it plays in the mid to late game, but I am loving it so far. Oh and the multiplayer is damn fun too. There is a pretty large community and I have had no problems finding near full servers to join.
Here is the game's website with demo
