Really only the Nazis and the French have ever managed to conquer all of mainland Europe, and were coincidently both stopped by Russia. Bonaparte was indeed French, the Italians had sold Corsica to France a couple of years before he was born.

The whole surendermonkey stereotype only came about after the second world war, and the yanks gave it more force when they got pissed that France vetoed the UN invasion of Iraq. The relatively fast French defeat in WW2 wasn't really surprising, for one the Germans had already steamrolled several of their neighbours without much difficulty and the country was still reeling pretty badly from the first war which took place almost entirely on French soil costing 1.4 million French military deaths. Despite this some of the border forts managed to hold the German forces at bay for as long as 9 months after the country had officially been occupied.

Well, you've got a rather major geographical advantage. Having to cross any body of water makes invasion vastly harder, operation Overlord proves this quite well. Despite attacking the most thinly defended and undermanned part of Normandy every German killed on the beaches still took 3 or 4 allies with him. When the germans took france they too went the least defended route, that is they decided rather than tangle with the most ridiculously well defended border in human history they decided to smash through Belgium.

Had it not been for the English channel the British would've been just as fucked as the rest of us. If it hadn't been for the Russians even the channel wouldn't have protected Britain in the long run.

At any rate, there's a difference between conquest and occupation. Conquest implies that you get to keep the land, at least for a while, as your sovereign territory.
