Please answer this question

Post by Virgil »

A woman, while at the funeral of her own mother met a guy whom she did not know. She thought this guy was amazing.
She believed him to be her dream guy so much that she fell in love
with him right there, but never asked for his number and could not find him.

A few days later she killed her sister !!!!!

Question: What is her motive for killing her sister?
I wanted to be the first kid on my block with a confirmed kill

That is the answer that wins the prize.
This is an actual question from a questionnaire used to screen people with possible psychotic tenancies from being given access to areas that require authorization to use deadly force as a matter of security. Apparently this question is usually answered this way by people known to exhibit this type of behavior, it has been suggested that there is a disproportionate number of people in the online gaming community that answer this question with the "correct" answer. Wonder what that says about us in general?
I'll now send a note to FN suggesting he keep an eye on you as part of the screening process.
Perhaps we should include this question in poll format in future applications for membership and access to this forum just to see the answers in a poll type format.

Wonder how many thought of that answer and just didn't post?

We could all be possible future post office employees

there has also been a study on bikers, it seems due to the level of concentration required to ride bikes and keep rubber side down, we are infact quicker thinking and more perspective. "shrugs"

ill be seeing FN in aug, im sure once he goes home after the summit ill be banned from here for good

joking aside, i can see the truth in this, not sure about you guys but when im fighting or when i was fighting, i use to get a real buzz and the adrenal glands start working. i think gaming can make us more angry.

Its very bad psychology in short. I think yout just as likely to give the answer because it makes sense as because you've got violent tendencies. I think its badly formulated tbh, it says more of your ability to recognize violent motives in others than it does about your own.

But then, psychology has always been a crackpot field of medicine.

That's probably because psychology isn't a field of medicine. Psychology is the study of mental functions and behavior. Medicine is the art and science of healing. Psychiatry is the field of medicine devoted to the treatment, study, and prevention of mental illnesses.

Psychology has been criticized as being a "soft" or "psuedo" science because things like personality, thinking, and emotion can't be directly measured and tested via the scientific method. Portions of almost every theory in psychology have been discredited at one time or another because they aren't supported by empirical evidence. Fringe practices like rebirthing, reparenting, past-life regression, Primal therapy, neurolinguistic programming, alien abduction therapy, and angel therapy haven't helped the cause.

I put the whole theory about violent video games causing people to be violent up there with those fringe theories. In my opinion, it's a case of correlation being mistaken for cause. People who have committed violence have been found to play video games. People who play violent video games don't always commit violence. There's a positive correlation in one direction, but not the other. So, there isn't enough evidence to say that the video games are the cause. If you haven't read the book "Freakonomics", it has a lot of examples about the difference between correlation and cause/effect.

That being said, psychology is a very large field of study and has a lot of applications that aren't "crackpot". For example, occupational psychology is used in large organizations to find ways to help people accept change, motivate them to success, etc. Educational psychology helps people with learning disabilities find the best way to deal with their limitations. Forensic psychology is used to determine a defendant's state of mind when they committed a crime and if they knew what they were doing was wrong at the time.

Ok, so now we have almost every poster either admitting they thought of the answer and didn't post it or people posting reasons that the theory is a bunch of crap. Does the correlation not seem to have some validity in view of the answers ?

I didn't post because I wasn't at home reading it ;), and daggerz had already replied.

Being crap or not, I suggest the other people who answered did so as a joke, and actually knew the real answer.

In all seriousness anyone with an ounce of intellect would say the "correct" answer.

I didn't get the answer right away. Then again I'm one of the non-PvPers in the clan that never loses his temper over anything, so I guess that fits the theory.

Pretty much instant :s

But I really am not violent, and it takes a silly amount to make me lose my temper ...

It was the only logical possible solution given the facts. I don't understand how that can be a serious question about "mental health"... I can't remember the last time I lost my temper, I just normally say fuck it and give up by that point .
