Re: RL PA?!
No, theyve been working on this for years and its quite normal in Japan for experimental tech to go into production to finance further research. Sorta like the Honda Asimov is being produced and sold as a high end toy gadget although it was infact meant as a research project rather than product development.FN wrote:...

As for the name of the company it seems to be abit of a joke, especially with their prototype suit being named HAL.

That's the part I was referring to. A company named Cyberdyne is manufacturing a robotic suit... REALLY LLOYD???Solid Rock wrote:As for the name of the company it seems to be abit of a joke, especially with their prototype suit being named HAL.

No, he is helping disabled people to walk and revolutionising workplaces that require heavy lifting. This does not have fuck all combat combat application. The whole rig is too clumsy and cumbersome for that not to mention fragile.

B) Publicly, I'm sure that's all they're developing.
C) All technology is eventually exploited to military application, usually under the radar.
But yes, this specific guy is releasing it for public application. I'm sure that won't last long.

Re: RL PA?!
How on earth am I being Naive? Youve gotta bare in mind that unlike American R&D companies Japanese researchers don't get paid off with Exorbitant research grants to secretly develop weapons tech for the army. This is not because Japanese researchers have some kind of superior sense of moral integrity but because Japan is constitutionally prohibited from maintaining a standing army (Article 9), and this is one of the reasons that the US navy has such an immense presence within the isles as Japan is limited to a relatively small defense force and as such has had to form a defensive agreement with the US consisting of a treaty that requires the USAF to aid Japan in repelling any invasion of her sovereign territory.FN wrote:A) Don't be naive.Solid Rock wrote:No, he is helping disabled people to walk and revolutionising workplaces that require heavy lifting. There is no reason to become paranoid and suspect that they are developing anything more. And yes this will be put to military use but it will likely take a decade or two before the technology has progressed far enough to be applied in such a fashion, and so the primary goal of this particular project at this time is purely civilian. Its also worthwhile to mention that things work both ways an all things developed for military purposes eventually find civilian usage aswell.
On a side note the US army actually has a team working out of MIT trying to produce a military version of a powered exo skeleton but, last I heard, they could barely get a pair of leg braces twice as big as this entire suit to work properly.

Re: RL PA?!
Most military technology is eventually released for civilian/commercial use. Get the government to pay for the R&D, test it, and prove its usefulness then make a mint selling it commercially. GPS, encryption, Jeeps/Hummers, satellites, satellite phones, wireless (two-way radios), and even computers were all developed for military use and then went commercial.
I would even venture to say that this is how most of the technological advances in the last century came about. I'm sure it's no coincidence that so many technologies were invented in the US with its need for a technological military. Corporations aren't big risk takers when it's their dime that's at risk. If it flops, they lose. If the government paid for the development and it flops, no harm done they still got paid.
Don't try to make it sound so ominous... geez, you cynics.

Thanks for that, nice to see im not the only one that can see the world through something other than a set of conspiracy goggles.Lachlan wrote:Most military technology is eventually released for civilian/commercial use. In Japan though it is actually corporations that sponsor almost all R&D projects and as I said earlier this is also the reason why prototypes are often pushed into commercial application much sooner than anywhere else in the world because said companies are eager to see a profit off their investment.

Re: RL PA?!
dude! japan is a massive technology power house! ofc they are turning all their technology into weapons for when they strike! i wouldnt be suprised if they secretly put bugs in all electronics and actually developed that suit from a military 1 they already made.
