Again, fantasy *choke* - but seems to be the same as Darkfall, with newer technology (UT3 Engine, SpeedTree)...

Again, PvP centric.

I've got a new strict policy concerning MMOs..

Thou shalt not play a MMO containing PAW. (Potions and Wizards)

I actually don't mind those things. Take Diablo and Oblivion for instance.

My rule is:

Beware of DOGGIE (Dwarves, Orcs, Gnomes, Goblins, and Instances of Elves (Blood, Night, Half, High, Dark, etc))

I am wary of any game pushing combinations of those classes since it's so f-ing overdone it makes me ill. But if there are intriguing features, has a good rep, and has promising PvP, I'll consider it. Overall I'm here to game and have a good time so I try to be open-minded. I just know what things generally put me off. I'm still game for a Darkfall Free Trial and have signed up for the Mortal Online Beta.

Unrelated - Dajuda, how do you like that monitor? I currently have it on my wishlist on Newegg among other monitors.

Diablo is the exception to the rule.

I'm assuming you're talking about the Acer 22" since you cant get the Dell on Newegg. It's alright, fine for a second monitor. Honestly after using the Dell PVA panel everything else just looks bad. The Dell 24" was probably the best computer part purchase I've ever made. Below is the review I left on Newegg.
Pros: Lightweight, clear picture, bright colors. All cables were included. Thin bezel. Cheap price. Good for general use.

Cons: Very noticeable back light bleed from all sides of the monitor. Usually only see this on the top and bottom. Contrast ratio seems way less than 2500:1. Stand is cheap plastic, no vertical adjustment. Buttons feel cheap, wiggle in their slots. In addition, this monitor suffers from all of the problems usually associated with TN panels.

Other Thoughts: Next to my Dell 2407WFP this monitor looks sub par. A user never having seen a good quality PVA panel would likely never notice the difference. The monitor took a large amount of adjustments, color, gamma, brightness, contrast. The colors still don't look "right" on everything. All of that being said, this is a great value. <$200 for a 22" monitor is a pretty good deal.

Fair enough. I'm not aware of ever seeing a PVA or MVA monitor, tho I know they exist. My 19" Hanns-G is being repurposed within the next month so my budget-ass needs to get a new monitor for <=$200 soon.

It's probably the best you'll find for the price. Another thing is I'm using the VGA connection instead of DVI, and it's on a "bad" video card. I'm sure that after some more adjustments and some good hardware to hook it up to it would be great for gaming and general use.

As an introduction, here is what the Mortal Online team says their game is not: "There are no levels, no experience points, no starting classes, no quests, no 3rd person view, no NPCs with big exclamation marks over their heads, no global chat channels, no flashing numbers when you hit something, no respawning bosses, no instances, no pocketable mounts, no virtual restrictions for where you can go or not, no auto-loot, no predestined player path where it turns out you're The Chosen One, no automated auction house, no auto-respawn, no NPCs you "can't attack", no bears that drop gold coins or dragons that drop swords, and no loot bags impossible for other players to open." I think they've made their point.

The combat features no targeting and requires you to aim your melee slashes, ranged projectiles and shield blocks manually. Enemies have hitboxes over different parts of their bodies, and attacking certain areas can have an additional effect (e.g. hitting an arm might make them drop their weapon). The view is first-person.

Full loot PvP. If you kill someone you can take all their stuff. If you steal, or kill a player that is flagged as innocent you may be flagged as a murderer and hunted by city guards.

Although there's no leveling, skills can be improved through repeated use. However, skills that are used in PvP have a cap on them so that it is mostly about skill and not playing time. There are primary skills, like Swordmanship, and secondary skills which are a subset of the primaries. Only primary skills will have much of an impact on PvP.

Every item in the game can be crafted. If you find an item, you can "reverse-engineer" it to work out how it would be crafted, and then do so.

Player Housing will be similar to Star Wars Galaxies, in that the world is empty to begin with and will fill with houses as people create them. In other words, a building is unique, and is only there because someone built it; they are not reusable instance portals that any number of people use as their home.

You can mix your race within your species. For example, just as people in our world could have a Chinese father and a German mother, your Mortal Online character can combine any two races and these choices will affect appearance as well as attributes.

Mounts can not simply be unsummoned. They can wander off or be stolen if you don't watch them, and they can also be used in combat.

Seamless continents with no zoning. Navigation won't be easy at first, as there is no radar and mapmaking is actually a craft to be mastered.

Bosses won't respawn, and members of the Mortal Online team can assume the role of any important NPC to provide unique events.

It's a shame this game is fantasy-themed because I like a lot of their design goals. Might still be worth trying.

I hate to say it, but while these are interesting design goals, they might as well put in permadeath. The vast majority of people do not want this kind of game and it will fail. There is a reason why FPS/twitch and MMOs (i.e. game with an economy, skills, virtual stuff) don't go together. Most people don't have the skill to play twitch combat and be good at it, so if they lose and there is a big penalty they just won't play anymore. Games like Halo, Counterstrike, and the like can afford this style of combat because there's nothing for you to lose since it all respawns anyway and there's no monthly fee.

Games that involved a huge time or money sink cannot afford to implement twitch combat and a large death penalty (full looting/permadeath). No one is going to play if they aren't having fun and most people don't find losing what you've worked hours or days for in a 30 second fight very fun. I liked Neocron because it did have a penalty for death, but in the end it wasn't severe enough to make me stop playing.

I'm not a real big MMO player, but I really enjoyed the simplicity of Diablo II (except for the difficulty modes being the SAME EXACT STORY LINE BLEH!) I REALLY enjoy WOW because, for me, I'm not required to PVP. I enjoy having a bit of direction with the quests, and honestly, my favorite part is getting the achievements. Certainly there could be many areas of the game that could be changed to make it even better, but then it would be a different game. It is this that I am looking for. I also played Guild Wars (WOW wanna be, horrible graphics for my computer..poor thing couldn't handle the majority of it it was so glitchy).

I think my favorite points in these games are the fact that you can do much of it solo, but you still have the comaraderie to play with your clan/guild. I do like that you are given the option for PVP, but (on the servers I play on), you can't be walking down the road minding your own business then flat on the ground the next second.

I like playing a gnome. But then, I do have the more feminine-type outlook...its cute and I like the cute graphics.

I also like the more fantasy-style stuff because my simple mind can't get around the different kinds of guns and ammo....well, I can't get around all the different armor either, and thats why I have Razia and the rest of the guild telling me what gear I need. lol

Being that its pretty much point and click makes it a viable place for me to play because my coordination with the keyboard/mouse is really off.

Also, the point of view is a HUGE thing for me. the FPS I can't do because of my motion sickness. That's why I had to stop playing Neocron, thats why Halo's PVP didn't work out, thats why the old 007 FPS/Halo-type game didn't work for me.

These factors always contribute to the games I play..and this is why I play WOW. (that and I like the cooking and fishing!!)
